Over 9 months as a Digital Strategist with MJ Hegar’s team, I participated in every step on her journey, from the primary to the runoff to the general election.
While we didn’t flip Texas this year, we laid groundwork…
Establishing a digital presence.
When I hit the ground in February of 2020, our digital program consisted of myself and the Digital Director, Leah Lacure. Together, we built MJ’s digital presence, establishing her as the strongest online fundraiser and social media candidate during the Texas Senate primary.
Competing nationally.
As we entered a runoff, we had to compete nationally for fundraising with a slew of very strong candidates with excellent digital program who had already come out of hotly contested primaries. We managed to create a brand all of our own and maintain a powerful online fundraising program, winning our runoff and taking on Sen. John Cornyn directly.
Taking on Texas.
Taking on Sen. John Cornyn was never going to be easy. We knew that flipping Texas was going to be a challenge, and that was before a pandemic that severely hindered our ability to reach the voters we needed — however we built a strong, scrappy digital program that consistently outraised Sen. Cornyn in the last months of the campaign, allowing us to close in and project strength. As we continue to fight for Texas, we will have established good will, donor bases, and a national standing for digital groundwork in a state that no one believed we could compete for.
